From 1 October, there’s a new requirement for letting agents to join a redress scheme for dealing with complaints. An agent must join a scheme if they let or manage private rented accommodation or do both. Property management agents must also join a scheme if they manage private rented or leasehold accommodation. The government has approved three schemes run by:

  • The Property Ombudsman
  • Ombudsman Services: Property
  • The Property Redress Scheme.

If your complaint to an agent isn’t resolved using their internal complaints procedure, you can now complain to the scheme to which the agent belongs. A local authority can fine an agent for not joining a scheme.
